A Celebration of Languages

Welcome back to what promises to be a very exciting year for the Languages Faculty in 2026!

This year, the faculty is delighted to welcome a new face to the team, our new Italian teacher, Ms Michelle Fragomeni, who will be teaching Middle School Italian. Ms Fragomeni has already made a positive impact within the faculty, and the girls in her classes have enjoyed the new experiences she has introduced into the language classroom. We also warmly welcome back Sr Hieu Tran and Madame Otina-Griffin, who teach Vietnamese and French respectively within the Senior School, and Maestra Piotto who delivers the Primary School Italian curriculum.

On Tuesday 17 February, our College community gathered to celebrate Lunar New Year — welcoming the Year of the Horse. Under the guidance of Sr Hieu, our Vietnamese language students participated in a range of celebratory activities to mark this important cultural event and learnt about the cultural significance of the Year of the Horse within Vietnamese traditions. Staff and students were invited to add a touch of traditional colour to their uniform, such as red, yellow, or gold, as a joyful sign of celebration. Girls also collected meaningful wishing quotes designed and decorated on a blossom tree by the Languages and Culture Club.  Our Art Prefects also joined the celebration by guiding students in making lanterns, bringing creativity and cultural learning together.

As we continue to nurture a love of language learning, we recognise that learning a second language is no easy feat. However, the following key strategies can support our girls in building confidence and becoming successful, resilient language learners:

  • Practise little and often every day; consistency is key!
  • Do not be afraid to make mistakes; this is how we learn.
  • Immerse yourself in the language through music, films or reading. You have plenty of material at your fingertips!
  • Revise vocabulary regularly rather than cramming before assessments.
  • Speak the language whenever possible, even if it’s just a few words each day.

To hear about the impact of studying a language in school, and participating in a school Study Trip, check out this Radio Italia Uno interview below, with Old Scholar Amelia Hegarty (Class of 2020).

We look forward to sharing more language news as the year unfolds.
