Learning

As our girls embark on the transition from Junior to Secondary School, it’s a crucial time for us at the college. To help guide them through this change, we create a structured and supportive environment for them to grow in.

Learning Pathways in the Middle School

Throughout their time at St Dominic’s Priory College, girls are encouraged to pursue and shape their own learning journey. The Middle School years are a particularly important period for inquiry, discovery, and growth. It is during this time that students begin to identify the subjects, skills, and ways of learning that excite and motivate them, while also building the foundations needed for future subject choices in the Senior years. 

Curriculum Overview

Right throughout their time with us, St Dominic’s girls are encouraged to pursue and build their own learning journey. Middle School is a particularly important time for inquiry and discovery, as our girls start to hone in on the topics and skills that are most exciting for them – and prepare for the choices they’ll need to make later in high school.

A Wide Range of Subjects to Explore

Our Middle School curriculum is aligned with the Australian Curriculum and offers a broad and balanced range of learning areas, including: 

  • The Arts 
  • English 
  • Mathematics 
  • Health and Physical Education 
  • Languages other than English
  • Science 
  • Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) 
  • Technologies 

In addition, through Religious Education, students are invited to deepen their understanding of faith, spirituality, and social justice, and to reflect on their role as compassionate and responsible members of the community. 

Learning across these areas is enriched through interdisciplinary and problem-based approaches, allowing students to make meaningful connections between subjects and apply their learning in engaging and thoughtful ways. 

Digital Learning and Responsible Technology Use

We recognise the vital role technology plays in preparing our girls to thrive in a modern world. Our College Laptop Program ensures every student from Year 4 to Year 12 is provided with a College-issued device, offering consistency, reliability, and equitable access to learning tools. 

Students are supported to develop healthy online behaviours through a curriculum that explicitly teaches responsible, ethical, and safe use of technology. This includes age-appropriate education around artificial intelligence (AI), with appropriate use embedded within our Academic Honesty Policy. 

St Dominic’s Priory College strongly endorses the eSafety Commissioner’s position on social media use for children under the age of 16 and prioritises student wellbeing and safety in all digital practices. In line with this commitment, students are not permitted to use mobile phones during school hours, including recess and lunch, supporting focus, connection, and balance throughout the school day. 

Keeping Parents Involved in the Journey

We recognise that parent partnership plays a vital role in a student’s success during Middle School. Staying informed and connected allows parents to support their daughter’s learning, wellbeing, and development with confidence. 

At St Dominic’s Priory College, we provide clear and open channels of communication through SEQTA. SEQTA is our Learning Management System and the College’s primary communication platform, bringing key information together in one central location. Through the SEQTA Engage app, parents can receive direct messages, access College news and notices, and stay informed about their daughter’s learning. 

Parents can view assessment tasks, due dates, feedback, grades, and subject information, ensuring transparency and timely access to what matters most. These tools are designed to strengthen communication between home and school, enabling parents to remain actively involved and well-supported as their daughter progresses through her learning journey.
