Tools to help Navigate AI at Home
Artificial intelligence is already part of young people’s everyday lives. From homework help tools to chatbots and image generators, many students are interacting with AI regularly, often outside school hours and on personal devices.
We are developing policies and have integrated guidance for AI use in learning in our Academic Honesty Policy, but most AI use actually happens at home. That means families play an important role in helping children develop safe, thoughtful and responsible habits.
To support this, we are sharing a one-page Family AI Planner with parents and carers. It provides a simple structure for starting conversations at home about how AI is used, what information is shared, and how students can continue to develop their thinking while using these tools.
The planner is based on six key areas:
- Access and boundaries
- Privacy and data
- Truth and critical thinking
- Learning and effort
- Well-being and relationships
- Ethics and responsibility
Importantly, families don’t need to address everything at once. Even one conversation is a strong first step. As the planner explains, conversations are more powerful than controls when supporting young people to navigate emerging technologies.
Research shows that 73% of young people aged 13–18 have used an AI chatbot, but only around 30% of parents have discussed AI use with their children.
This resource is designed to help close that gap by giving families practical language and starting points.
We encourage parents to begin with just one domain that feels most relevant for their child this term and have a simple conversation together.
