Pastoral Care and Service in Year 11

I thought it was really nice how we spent our time making something valuable and memorable for people nearing the end of their life. It’s nice to know I can help in small ways.

Supporting the Mary Potter Foundation

The Year 11 pastoral program has developed a very special relationship with our neighbours at The Mary Potter Foundation. Every year, the students offer their time and services to create a range of items used to assist hospice patients or their residential outcare patients. This term, as we turn our attention to the Lenten season, the Year 11s spent some time making decorative easter eggs to be hung in the hospice. With careful arrangements of beds and sequins, the students have made some beautiful craft items that I am sure will be appreciated by families and patients alike.  Some comments made by the students:

“It took a lot of patience and concentration, but I liked how it was a mindfulness activity that was calming and helped deal with the stresses of Year 11” - Bella R. (11W)

“It was a good activity – it was fun and thoughtful. I think it's important to take a break from our lives, and think of others who are not as fortunate” - Shanum J. (11G)

“The activity made me consider things from another person’s perspective. I kept wondering how the easter egg would make someone’s day, so it made me put a lot more effort into making it” - Julieta P. (11B)

Road Awareness Program

The Year 11 Pastoral Care program has had a busy Term 1.  Most recently, the students participated in a Road Awareness Program (RAP), educating students about the safety and responsibilities involved in being a driver on our roads. Students learned about statistics regarding youth drivers specifically and how to avoid being a passenger with an unsafe driver. A very powerful part of the RAP workshop was listening to a survivor of reckless youth driving and how it has impacted all facets of his life, from learning how to walk and talk again, their living arrangements, impact on friends and family and their mental health. Students were moved by the honesty and frankness of Brett, who makes it his mission to go to schools to speak with young people in the hope of influencing their driving habits.

Students were asked to complete a brief survey before and after the session. From the 67 feedback forms received:

  • 54 indicated they were RESPONSIBLE road users before the RAP presentation.
  • 13 indicated they were RISK TAKERS before the RAP presentation.
  • 0 indicated they were TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE before the RAP.
  • 67 participants chose to be RESPONSIBLE road users after participating in the RAP presentation.

In response to whether they would adopt safer road behaviours following the program,  67 out of 67 participants said "YES".
