Adelaide Holocaust Museum and Andrew Steiner Education Centre

At the start of the year, the events at Bondi were a tragic reminder that there is still much to be done to “stand up against antisemitism and racism” (AHM Vision Statement), and thus it was a great privilege to attend the Adelaide Holocaust Museum in March.

During Year 10 all students study World War II and examine the impact of the Holocaust. This excursion provided an opportunity to engage with Holocaust themes and understand their continuing relevance in society today.

All the volunteers were very helpful and knowledgeable. When we did the activities, they explained events so that I learnt lots of new things. Being able to ask 92 year old Holocaust survivor, Andrew Steiner questions was very interesting. At the end we were able to walk around and read the information boards in the museum which added to our knowledge.

Electoral Commission of SA

During Term 1 Year 12 Legal Studies students were involved in an interactive workshop run by the Electoral Commission of SA. The workshop was based on Parliament and Elections.  Students discussed the following:

OPEN FREE FAIR Elections in South Australia with a focus on:

  • Franchise
  • Direct enrolment
  • Practical Ballot Draw activity
  • Changes to Electoral Law – Leg/Reg
  • Preparing for the election.

Indigenous Survival Technology

Year 7 students begin the school year studying a unit called Deep Time. As a part of this course, Philip “Wildman” Green visited the College with over 80 artefacts that the girls were able to pick up and learn about. His fascinating presentation revealed key information regarding a range of topics including traditional clothing, hunting, starting a fire, finding water and grinding seeds for flour. Students were thoroughly engaged in Philip’s stories and appreciated the opportunity to interact with museum grade items that shed light on life in Australia before European contact.

Simpson Prize

This term a small number of students in Year 10 have taken on the challenge of engaging with the 2026 Simpson Prize question, ‘How useful are artefacts and artwork as historical sources when researching the experience of Australians who served in the Second World War?’ We wish them well as they embark on a deep dive into primary sources.

The John Lewis Medal for Excellence in Secondary School Geography

This prestigious award is presented to the student obtaining the highest marks in SACE Stage 2 Geography in the state. Nihaal Muhammad Tadjar, who graduated last year as Proxime Accessit, is the deserving winner. Nihaal’s attention to detail and use of supporting data in each task ensured outstanding results throughout the course. Congratulations, Nihaal.

Flinders Camp

Each year, Stage 1 Geography students head off into the beautiful outback for a two-night camp. Getting students out of the classroom and into the real world is at the heart of geography fieldwork and when it comes to bushfire management, there's no substitute for being there!

Walking the land, observing fuel loads, and understanding how terrain and vegetation interact gives students a real feel for the challenges land managers face every day. On the way, the group always stops for lunch at the historic Giant Gum Tree in Orroroo. It is a 500-year-old Eucalyptus camaldulensis, estimated to be the oldest of its kind in South Australia.
