A Reflection of NYSF
The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) gives students who are about to start Year 12 a broader understanding of study and career options available in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). In January 2026, six soon-to-be Year 12 students travelled to Brisbane to attend the NYSF program at the University of Queensland.
One of my personal favourite STEM visits was to Griffith University in the Gold Coast. We visited the biotechnology lab and we got to participate in a practical experiment to discover how active chemicals in a sunscreen block out UV-A and UV-B radiation. We used a method we had never done before, and apparatus we’d never even heard of, which made the experience such an amazing learning opportunity.
NYSF was not just about visiting universities or attending lectures, the days were also filled with fun activities such as ‘cultural visits’, where participants were given the opportunity to visit Museums and Art Galleries across Queensland. Amongst these fun activities were a STEM Olympics, scavenger hunts and even a concert to end the trip.
For me, NYSF wasn’t just about science, it was about the connections we built, and the friendships that will continue long after the forum ended.
Rotary Clubs across Australia support students who are interested in STEM by helping fund opportunities like NYSF. Students who have applied, or are selected, can reach out to their local Rotary Club and apply for a sponsorship to help fund their attendance. St Dominic's Priory College is grateful to the Rotary Clubs who continue to support our students' participation in the National Youth Science Forum.
Before attending, some of us were quite unsure of career pathways we were interested in, however it definitely enlightened us to the vast possibilities that awaits.
Applications for the 2027 National Youth Science Forum are open now. Please visit the NYSF website for more details on how to apply: www.nysf.edu.au
