Gently and Smoothly Joining in to Play Together

Inside the Buzz @St Dom’s

This week’s social–emotional learning lesson focused on how to join games and conversations in a friendly, pro-social way. Students learned that approaching others calmly and kindly, rather than arriving abruptly, helps create positive, comfortable interactions for everyone.

Students also learned about the equal importance of including others. We talked about what it looks like to notice when someone might want to join in, and how a simple welcome can make a big difference to another person’s sense of belonging.

To strengthen these skills, students participated in role-plays and short conversational scenarios. For example, the Year 4 Class created puppet plays around the theme of 'joining into play effectively,' practicing how we can ask and respond to play in the yard. Throughout these activities, students were encouraged to share their opinions about which prosocial choices worked best and why.

We emphasised that being friendly and approachable is a skill that can be learned and improved. When children practise positive social strategies, they build stronger, more sustainable friendships.
