Assistive Technology in our Everyday Lives

On 17 August 2026, our Year 9 Gaming students participated in an engaging workshop exploring the role of Assistive Technology in our everyday lives. Students discovered that assistive technologies are all around us and are designed to maintain and improve a person’s independence.

Students then investigated how physical limitations can affect a person’s ability to use common gaming controllers. Working through the design process, they explored different user needs and challenges before designing and creating their own assistive gaming controllers.

I had a lot of fun, and the practical activity allowed me to be creative. For students interested in programming and engineering, I would recommend it. The presenter was nice and asked lots of questions.

The workshop encouraged students to think beyond traditional gaming and consider how technology can be designed to be more accessible and inclusive. Through hands-on experimentation, students gained a deeper understanding of user-centred design, accessibility and the importance of designing technology for a diverse range of users.

The incursion was fun and my favourite was the practical activity. I especially found learning about the courses and university life at Flinders University was very interesting. The overall experience was a great opportunity.

Most importantly, students had the opportunity to be creative, problem-solve and test their ideas while having plenty of fun along the way!
